Pearl Abyss wants to ensure there are plenty of “metaverse elements” which connect you to other players, if not always directly. It was originally planned to be, but the development team “ decided to move the game in a different direction ” and develop an action-adventure story which can be enjoyed in single player or co-op.Īccording to the game’s website, it will also have a “multiverse lobby” – effectively a social space in which players can chat with one another, listen to music, and watch movies. Despite initially being marketed as an MMO, DokeV won’t be a massively multiplayer title. What you’ll be catching are based on Dokebi or Dokkaebi – deities or spirits from Korean folklore.ĭokeV is being developed by Pearly Abyss, the studio behind the MMORPG Black Desert. Those allies aren’t your standard pocket monsters, however. Think Pokémon, but where fights play out in real-time action where you get stuck in alongside your various creature companions. What is DokeV? In DokeV's battles you'll team up with captured Dokebi to take on more powerful creatures.ĭokeV is an upcoming open-world creature-collecting action adventure. Rather than spend the time scratching our heads since then, however, we’ve rounded up all the available details on Pearl Abyss new title. When the DokeV trailer dropped as part of Gamescom 2021’s Opening Night Live show, we were equal parts impressed, intrigued, confused, and terrified. A standard that Pokémon isn’t quite living up to.Don’t worry, we didn’t really have a clue either. But because DokeV has shown an innovative spark of possibility that may well set a new standard. Or because DokeV is a guaranteed success. In 2021, Pokémon, in its current form, should be concerned about DokeV. As a result, they’ve lost the need to innovate because the market was theirs. And let’s face it, Pokémon hasn’t had any serious competition for years (hey, Digimon). But with a lack of real competition comes complacency. The real shame is that Pokémon could quite easily look as visually awesome as DokeV – if they really wanted it to. While it’s too early to tell if DokeV really has what it takes to supplant Pokémon as the king of creature-collecting, it certainly has potential. Credit: Pearl Abyss Will DokeV be the next Pokémon? But if DokeV musters up some exciting looking critters alongside its flamboyant and fun open-world, Pokémon should be worried. Luckily for Nintendo, Pokémon retains the edge there for now. So, it’d be a shame if Pearl Abyss didn’t have more up their sleeve on the creatures front. That said, there’s no doubt more to come from DokeV. And ultimately, if you can’t match Pikachu and Charizard, you’re facing an uphill battle. While DokeV‘s world looks great, the same can’t really be said for its creatures… At least not yet.īased on the short glimpse we got, they lack the creative umph of Pokémon. Of course, I will reserve final judgement until Pokémon Legends: Arceus is released, but it seems destined for “meh”. And while diehard fans will always get the new games, it doesn’t entice anyone new. But, fundamentally, it hasn’t kept up with the times. Why, with all the money and success Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have made off the back of the series, they aren’t producing a game that looks even remotely close to DokeV is simply baffling. Pokémon Legends: Arceus looking distinctly “meh”. There’s just nothing about it that screams “next-gen”. Pokémon Legends: Arceus, an open-world action RPG, coming in January 2022, is perhaps most in line with what DokeV will be. I’d go as far as to say it looks like one of the most “alive” and vibrant worlds I’ve seen from an open-world gameplay trailer. Whatever your thoughts on its kid-orientated approach, its open-world is incredibly impressive. Credit: Pearl AbyssĭokeV has, without doubt, set a new graphical benchmark for the genre. However, anyone would struggle to argue that, technically speaking, it has improved in parallel with gaming hardware. Yes, improvements have been made to that trusty Pokémon formula over the years. But it has arguably fallen into the same formulaic rut that has trapped other long standing franchises like Call of Duty and FIFA. They have even described it as “a creature-collecting open world action-adventure”, which is pretty much Pokémon‘s whole schtick. And developer Pearl Abyss may very well be striving for DokeV to be the next Pokémon. Dive into a gorgeous and lively world where Dokebi and humans live side-by-side!
